Division of labour....

How do you divvy up your household chores (if indeed you do)?

DB does a snack for us on the evening of our walking day as well as our Friday night chip tea. He also does most of the ironing and cleans by hand, under the rim of the toilet once a month to clear it of limescale. He also does most of the hoovering and lays the fire everyday and cleans away the ashes when needed as well as cleaning the glass on the front of the woodburner. I clean the chimney.

He will tackle any chore I set him in the garden, then does other household fixing/cleaning jobs as and when needed (pavements, weeding the gravel, cleaning out the gutters etc). He likes to keep himself busy!

I do most of the gardening, cooking and baking. Washing of clothes is done by me as well as cleaning the windows (most of the time). I generally do the dusting but not always and clean the bathroom and kitchen. He washes the pots and I dry. We both do the food shopping and putting it away.

Quite a nice division of chores methinks. He may tackle slightly more than me but I have a bit of joint discomfort which is why he tackles a few more of the heavier jobs. He is a good egg!

  1. I do the nice bits of gardening like sorting the flowers and picking the fruits of his labour (beans/toms, etc). He does everything else garden wise. He does all DIY (saving us a fortune). I do all the cooking. He does the pots. I tend to all the wildlife feeding as well as the cat. I do all the washing and try to keep ironing minimal. We do have a window cleaner but he's very cheap. I think hubby does the bits necessary plus he still works full time on a construction site so he comes in shattered.

  2. It's just me and I allocate them as:
Jobs that HAVE to be done today
Jobs that need doing at some point (whereupon they move up to the HAVE list)
Jobs that I can easily leave until the day before my parents visit!!!

  3. Sounds like us. OH was brought up where there were were “pink job” and “blue jobs” very 1950’s. He has embraced the equality of the sexes and does a lovely Victoria sponge if we are having visitors. He does a bathroom deep clean each week when I am late home. I enjoy the gardening jobs when I’m able and I do all the money things as he hates it. If the car is dirty either of us will washi it. We have never discussed who does what but have settled into a way of getting things done according to our strengths.

    1. DB does the money. I do it occasionally so I know all the in’s and out’s and what bit of computer programme I need to be using.

  6. You are all very lucky! My husband makes the bed, takes out the trash, does one dog walk a day and offers to help after I’m just about done. Sometimes he’ll do the windows or blinds. This year, he started the blinds. I had to start over because he took so long so I did the whole house. The windows haven’t been done in years. I’ve asked for help and it falls on deaf ears. When I work 40 hour weeks, (Summer job), nothing changes. One year I asked for help and he didn’t like my ‘tone’. So, I don’t ask anymore. Divorce has been mentioned. Ours is not a partnership which is what it should be.

    1. That is a shame. Unfortunately, there are many partners around like that, of both sexes.

  7. Unfortunately, things changed drastically for DH and I 17 weeks ago. He is an avid golfer, 3-4 times a week. He went golfing and felt a pain in his left leg and couldn't walk by the 3rd hole. To make a very, very, very long story short he has spinal stenosis and the sciatic nerve is trapped causing constant pain in his buttocks, down his left leg to his foot and the foot goes numb. He has actually improved slightly that he can manage to get around the house without his cane. We have a wheelchair for when we go anywhere and fortunately all the supermarkets have electric scooters. Needless to say all 'blue' jobs have become 'pink' jobs. After 45 years together I mowed the lawn for the first time this year and have learnt to use the snowblower. We are questioning whether he is actually improving or is it the mega amounts of medication he is taking masking things. We go to see a neurosurgeon in 2 weeks who will probably suggest surgery. We'll see what happens. Sadly division of labour is probably 98%-2%. He can stand for a couple of minutes at the sink and dry the breakfast dishes-it's progress-baby steps.

  9. He does the hedges, lawns, all the wood connected with the stoves, anything to do with the cars, anything electrical, all the online banking, makes endless cups of tea or coffee. He cooks Friday night, especially if it involves the deep fat fryer, as I cant be trusted with it (long story) and sweeps down the stairs. He also does the chickens, the sheep and cuddles the cat. I do everything else. Works for us.

  10. Hmm. I do most if not all of the inside jobs. Harvey shovels the snow, does the veggie gardening, the painting, repairs to the house and appliances. He also washes down the house siding, and washes the windows.

Since he is usually the last out of bed I have him making it. I do however have to be the one that changes the bedding and washes it.

    God bless.
